This striking piece of art was originally painted to advertise cigars. Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was commissioned by an American advertising agency to paint a series of 16 oil paintings depicting poker dogs between 1894 and 1903. The paintings are often referenced in American pop culture. For example, the poker dogs return in the Pixar animated film Up, can they be found in Yosemite Sam's casion in the Looney Tunes and hangs one of Coolidge's paintings in Roseanne 's living room on the TV show of the same name.
